It's great a law was passed to prevent a President from unilaterally pulling out of NATO as a shot across the bow for wannabe authoritarian Oval Office occupiers. It's a good first step and we need as many as it takes to collar the inevitable authoritarian president who will be helped by Russia, China and the democracy hating rightwing media, because no party wins every election. But it’s not the only thing we need.
It's no longer a Democrat v Republican dynamic to determine who wins an election at any level. It's now a more parliamentarian dynamic where believers in democracy and those who believe the only acceptable outcome, is to win and by whatever means necessary, even it that means creating the conditions that nullify the need for future elections.
The group that wins is the one who will get the biggest number of votes everywhere, not just where they have the advantage. We can't take for granted there are enough like-minded Democrats, Republicans and Independents willing to come together and vote for a candidate in the other party not their own in order to protect the Rule of Law specifically and the Constitution generally .
None of us have the luxury of sitting on our hands relying on the assumption good always triumphs over evil. Everyone can do something, indeed it's the only way to save us all from a dictatorial dynasty. Never have this many Republicans been willing to say they will not vote for Donald Trump and support a Democrat. There’s some comfort to be found there, but it may not be bigger than the number of Democrats, swing voters and Republicans who say they would vote for a 3rd party candidate.
So do something, anything, now to make your voice be heard.
